PowerField develops and operates solar parks and co-located battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the Netherlands, with more than 300 MW currently in operation. Its in-house trading company, PowerField Energy, acts as the commercial counterpart for the company’s assets. PowerField Energy trades directly in the day-ahead and intraday markets, while also operating as a Balancing Service Provider (BSP) and Congestion Service Provider (CSP) for its portfolio.
For PowerField, the main challenges were linked to the variable and uncertain nature of solar production. According to Eelco Rondhuis, Head of Energy Management at PowerField, forecast deviations required constant monitoring, and intraday opportunities for curtailment and de-curtailment optimisation demanded fast reaction times.
Eelco explains: “Without automation, these activities were resource-intensive, and required significant manual effort.
“The team therefore set out to automate short-term trading activities to reduce the manual workload, improve responsiveness to market movements, better integrate production forecasts with market optimisation, and minimise imbalance costs while maximising revenue opportunities.”
To address these challenges, PowerField implemented Volue PowerBot, a scalable execution platform designed for 24/7 trading in European short-term power markets such as EPEX SPOT and Nord Pool. Optimised for intraday continuous trading as well as auction markets, Volue PowerBot provides traders with a comprehensive solution for short-term power trading.
The platform is equipped with high-performance algorithms, fine-tuned through backtesting, while also allowing users to develop and deploy custom trading strategies in the cloud. Its strong focus on market data and analytics makes it a powerful foundation for quantitative trading desks, while still offering plug-and-play functionality for immediate use.
Built as an API-first microservice, it delivers integrated risk management, compliance features, and a high-performance API, enabling seamless, efficient, and regulatory-compliant operations. By ensuring full traceability and flexible risk controls, the platform also supports adherence to REMIT II and other regulatory requirements.
Eelco concludes. “Since adopting Volue PowerBot, PowerField has seen significant improvements in trade execution speed and efficiency. Orders are now placed and adjusted in real time according to market signals and forecast updates, which has increased operational efficiency and reduced the risk of missing profitable intraday opportunities. This automation has not only improved execution accuracy but has also contributed to a noticeable increase in trading revenues, particularly in the intraday market.
“At the same time, automated reactions to forecast deviations have reduced imbalance costs, strengthening overall portfolio management. The trading team has been able to shift its focus from repetitive manual tasks to higher-value activities such as market analysis and strategy development.
“Simply put, the adoption of Volue PowerBot has transformed PowerField’s approach to European short-term power trading. By automating key parts of the process, the company has been able to scale its trading activities more effectively and respond to market signals in real time. This shift has moved PowerField from a manual, reactive trading approach to one that is proactive, automated, and data-driven - positioning the company for long-term success in an increasingly dynamic power market.”
